chris, you could get a pfd from either manufacturer and do well. Extrasport makes a lot of pfds that also are used for rafting that would not do well because they are too long. All of the catalogs will specify whether the pfd is for paddling or rafting. I don't think high volume pfd are particularly necessary for paddling. This is just my opinion but all these pfds with shoulder adjustments seem gimmicky, the straps at the waist and torso hold it on. The other fashionable change in pfds are side zips, another goofy idea since you have to pull it over your head anyway, just like the minimal pullover type. I think the minimal pullover whitewater type are great because they have very little restriction to movement and won't catch on anything, the lack of pockets isn't all that bad, lotus has one called Sherman that is good. Whatever kind you get, be sure and snug it up tight when anticipating swimming. All those fancy pockets, adjustable straps, reflective patches won't do much good if the thing is floating up around your ears.
