Hi ben, don't know why it turns dark, I don't have the data comparing polyester to epoxy,but I'm under the general impression that polyester resin provides a matrix for glass fibers in a purely fiberglass laminate but isn't much of an adhesive compared to epoxy. So the epoxy can to a better job bonding thin plywood edge to edge with fillets as well as bonding a single layer of glass to wood. Also epoxy soaks into the wood to make a hard surface as well. I think bondo is just polyester putty stuff.
