hey ted, if the scarf is near the bow or stern where stresses are less then don't worry too much, if the scarf is near the midline of the boat then a little reinforecement of glass on the inside(less fairing work) or outside might be an idea, I have found that a small sanding block (1x2x6") works much better than a big round sander. no woes,just making a kayak
