Re: PFD / Pockets?

Posted by: Shawn Baker on November 22, 1999

Kokatat and Lotus are the best/fanciest lines out there, but an Aquasport will work as well.

Lotus has two different sea kayaking vests

L'Ocean (based on their WW Lola) which is designed for women, but equally popular with men. It's designed with 3 foam panels, rather than the traditional 2, so gives women more room in the "chestal area"

Strait Jacket (based on their men's WW Rio Grande). I have the Rio Grande and love it. The Strait Jacket model adds a larger pocket, additional lash tabs, a tow belt system, and reflective striping. It's $130 retail, but would be a great vest. I got my Rio Grande for $80. The Strait Jacket/Rio Grande are traditionally cut, so aren't as comfortable for women, or men with huge pecs.

I used to paddle with a Stearns PFD, probably similar to your O'brien--definitely not cut for paddling with a sprayskirt, but nice to keep around for a loaner/spare.

As for pockets, they're definitely nice for carrying safety gear. I carry 3 Skyblazer flares, a signal mirror, matches in a waterproof case, chap stick, sunblock, and on longer trips, a small survival kit, a hand compass, and a space blanket (yep, all in the small Rio Grande pockets--sometimes I wish I'd bought the Strait Jacket for its taller pockets. Why do I carry so much safety stuff? Have you read "Deep Trouble"?
