Assuming the other methods mentioned are not what you want to hear, I would test out the following. (this is just a possibility - I have not tried it)

Search through all your ply scraps for a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 pc that matches closely in grain and pattern (best in reverse). The 1/2 x 1/2 area is faired out - since it was the result of oversanding (if not - fair out). Turn the new pc upside down and sand of all of the back veneers down to the last. Then glue and clamp clamp clamp the sucker down in place making sure the grain direction and character matches well. Take off clamps and sand (!) flush w/ the rest of the veneer.

Maybe this would work ok. Prob some glue or epoxy diffential staining, but I bet this would give a pretty good result. Should test it first.
