Hi Will, I have had the Garmin 12 for a couple years now and have been real happy with it. I us it in conjuntion with the charts (enter 3 or 4 easy to find waypoints along the coast to triangulate) and can fix a position on the charts in just a couple minutes, reguardless of visability or distance. It also is handy in the woods(bowhunter) and in the house (to annnoy the wife with useless little distance facts). I found it to be a little more user friendly than the magellan units (could just be me?) and it usualy only costs about $150. They also have a new downloadable unit called the E-map, runs about $200 but can download topo maps with coastal navigation info. If you are willing to adopt me, I would like this one as a Christmas present. Check it out at Garmin.com. Take care, TomP
