I have found that the best way to get a peice of matching veneer is to take a peice of scrap with similar grain and sand off the rest of the wood. I have done this with a bench mounted belt sander. I just pushed the wood onto it with a flat push block. You end up with the veneer remaining and you can pre-feather the edges this way. >
