Hi Ross,
Yeah the strips up front were tuff. I broke several and when I finally got them in they cracked after the fact and had to be filled with some small pieces later on. I would not recommend making that tight a bend to the shear without steam bending. The paddle is made of scrap from the boat, redwood, cedar, pine, and ash. the ash was steam bent around the blank before I started carving. The paddle took about 13hrs to make. I got all the info from Nick's web page "great info". The paddle is 85" long 3-1/2" wide at the tip and has a 24" loom "probably a little long based on Inuit rules of thumb, but it was comfortable the first time I used it. I saw Jay Babina's demo at the Rendezvous and I was sold. He made it look so easy to roll and skull I had to try it.
