the eye of the beholder

Dear Ted:

Maybe it's a beauty mark. Some distinctive feature to draw the eye and the attention of the admirer. An area of contrast to accentuate some other aspect of the boat.

Just trying to offer a little counterpoint to the other fine suggestions your post has generated. I know as I was making my boat this summer that I exercised my adult vocabulary pretty regularly and after a little while, I realized that

A -- It is, after all, a handmade boat, and has every right to look like one.

B -- The overall boat was beautiful, and my repeated focus on minor cosmetic flaws was a large waste of my time. Paddling it was even more fun than making it.
