Welcome to a freshwater paddler's paradise! I haven't gotten around to finding my old kayaking links after my hard-drive snafu, but I promise to pass along some info soon. Been busy with the Outer Island.
Great River Outfitters is in your neighborhood, and is I believe the largest paddling store here in the Midwest. Stop in and yak with the employees for some good information. Stan Chladek is the owner and is one of the world's foremost kayaking experts. I saw a slide presentation of his circumnavigation of Easter Island at one of this year's past symposia. Black Parrot is another source for lessons, trips, etc. On my side of the Lower Peninsula, the western Lake Michigan side, there is the West Michigan Coastal Kayakers Associaton http://www.iserv.net/~wmcka/ which has an annual symposium here. The Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Association http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Gorge/4657/ that holds an annual symposium way up in the Upper Peninsula at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore that you MUST attend!
Hopefully that's good for starters -- I have to find some good personal home pages that had lists of favorite kayaking destinaions, etc., that I'll pass along.
