Re: North Bay II finished photo

Posted by: lee on November 24, 1999

Bobby, looks great. You must have had a great time making it. I like the black coaming and shear. My north Bay has very rounded ends with a 2" black stripe running down the keel on the outside. I resolved the back deck strength issue by glassing the underside of the back deck with 4oz cloth, glueing a mahogany runner(the kind that a rubrail is made out of)1/4" x 1/2" down the center line, rounding it off , then glassing a 2" strip over that. The rear deck was installed onto the aft deck beam with the above reinforcement already attached to the 3mm plywood. The bulkhead is made out of 3" minicell very tightly fit behind the coaming and deck beam. The hatches are simply cutouts with a recessed ring underneath, 2 3mm strips 1 1/2" wide are glued under the deck spanning shear to shear next to the hatch with a strip of 9oz tape on top of that. I glassed the deck with 4oz. After bunches of back deck rescue shenanigans it has held up just fine, although the deck and hatch seal is not bone dry it is good enough. I like your recessed vcp hatches.
