Dear Will: I see that someone has already suggested the purchase of "Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation" by David Birch and I would definately second that suggestion. It is probably more helpfull than the GPS unit. In addition the USCG Auxillary provides a class in Coastal Navigation and most of it is applicable to Kayaks. As to a GPS unit I feel a basic unit such as the Garman 12 or the Magellin is all that's needed. I suggest that it be used as a backup to basic Coastal Navigation in conditions of good visability. A waterproof bag is a must as is a tether to the kayak of paddler.
