Cockpit Depth?

Posted by: Mike Hanks on November 27, 1999

I'm building a plywood version of the Putz Walrus for my brother, for Christmas. He is new to kayaking (been out once in my Arctic Tern). He is 6'3" and 175-180 lbs. with a size 10-1/2 foot. I'm planning on build the deck like the Pygmy Queen Charlotte(flat but peaked in front of the cockpit). I was planning on making it 12" deep at the front center part of the combing and 8" deep at the front bulkead just in front of the footbrace. I plan on building a footbrace like the one described in Nick's book. I am now wodering if these dimensions will be sufficient for him. Should I find a way to add more height to the deck in front of the cockpit?

Mike
