Fiberglass tape

Posted by: Ben-B on November 27, 1999

Hi everybody,

Just planning and costing !

First thanks for all your comments on "how strong is strong ennough ?". Your responses conviced me that polyester is not the way to go. Plus, my wife did not appreciate the smell of styrene in the house. I have used only 6 onces of polyester resine for my tests and I did that in the garage. Imagine what my wife's reaction will be if I cover a whole kayak with this stuff!!

I am thinking of buying 7yrds of 60" 10oz fiberglass cloth to make strips of 3" wide to use as tape. This will save me about 20 can$ per 50 yrds. For cutting the strips I am thinking of tightly rolling the cloth and then sawing (or cutting) the strips (like you cut salami. What are the pros and cons. I am looking forward to hear from you!
