Re: Taping butt joints

Posted by: lee on November 28, 1999

hi Doyle, the fun has just begun. be very careful with the sander around areas of disimilar hardness such as the glassed joint and adjacent wood. the scraper idea sounds good to me,try hand sanding with a small block sander, mask the adjacent area if you are concerned about sanding bare wood. If you do sand into the glass there will be a slightly visible patterern of glass under the subsequent layers of epoxy and 6 oz. It's not a crime, and personally I'd rather have that than lumpy layers.

I do not see what the problem is. Is the tape visible because there are white bubble spaces underneath?, or is the tape visible because the only tape and fiberglass on the boat is at the joint and it is getting all your attention?. If the epoxy is sanded fair, even though the glassed joint does stick above surface it will all look great when the hull is glassed. What is the acetone for? if you are putting that on bare wood with all that sanding of epoxy i'm thinking that might cause a little discoloration around the joint.

It's kind of funny that pygmy instructs folks do glass butt joints for the large center joints instead of plywood butt joints, as a first time builder the plywood on the inside is kind of instructive to subsequent building, with the outside a flush easy seam. This glassing with fine 4oz tape and the potential for airbubbles I find a little traumatic at the beginning. The ring of plywood butt joints on the inside looks comfortingly industrial.
