It's slightly heavier than cedar, and is slightly less elastic, so may be more prone to cracking while you're stripping. Not a terrible option, though. I would recommend spruce over pine, as it's somewhat lighter weight.

Don't worry too much about tippiness--the sensation of tippiness goes away rapidly after as little as 3 or 4 times out in the boat.
