Grant,
I hope I didn't slight you or anyone one else by just giving a few examples of builders or authors who might draw a crowd. There are many more! My apologies to anyone not mentioned.
What you need to do now is grab a date. Pick a weekend in the summer and start promoting your kayak building seminar. You may want to call a few people to get them as lead builders, or speakers -- or you can do that job yourself. And you will need to find a location. Send some e-mail notes to the various MN canoe and kayak clubs and you will get into their newsletters. Do it now and you'll have plenty of time for advance publicity. People will be able to plan their vacations around this.
If you pick a date in August there are no national holidays and there should be fewer mosquitos. By that time there will be more builders who have done some work on their own boats, and they will have more spare pieces to donate.
If you pick a date in June there are no national holidays, and there should be fewer mosquitos. That early in the summer you may be able to get donations of parts from people who are now putting those away for the winter, or who are starting in early spring. You stand to catch a crowd whose enthusiasm may convince them they can get started, and finish over the summer.
By the way, I'm just kidding about fewer mosquitos.
Hope to hear good news from you -- and many others who catch the bug -- about boat building seminars this summer.
Best regards
Paul G. Jacobson
