I have just finished striping the Great Auk in a combination of cedar and pine. They make a great contrast to build designs with. After glassing there will even be more contrast as the cedar changes color - darkens - and the pine does not. Cedar comes in so many variations of color one needs to take that into consideration. I had trouble finding pine that wasn't full of knots but managed. It is a little heavier and a little harder but I had no trouble with breakage. By the way I rounded out the deck of the Great Auk as I didn't like the idea of straight pointed deck. It looks great so I am pleased I made the change. There is so little actual wood needed that I think price is not much of a factor. I live in Washington and I think my cedar came from BC. If one can get all the wood that is needed for less than $100 why not get what one wants.
