Re: fiberglassing

Posted by: Ken Finger on November 30, 1999

I just got done taping the joints on my CLC Patuxent. I used 3" wide 9 oz tape. I would strongly recommend NOT using 9 oz tape. It's thick, which makes it hard to work with. Also, it takes 4 or 5 coats of epoxy to fill the weave. And don't forget a lot of sanding to feather in the edges. If (when) I build my next boat, I'll use 6 oz tape.

As for a source for thinner tapes, check out Composite Structures Technology at http://www.cstsales.com. They have a good selection of tape, ranging from 2 oz to 9 oz, not to mention nearly every type and weight fiberglass cloth I could imagine. I got 2.3 oz cloth from them for the deck of the Patuxent, as well as 2 oz tape to strengthen the tips of my paddles.

Happy building,

Ken
