Re: Expedition Single and Stability?

Posted by: Ed Valley on November 30, 1999

Hi David.

I built the Guillemot Expedition Single this spring (1999) and I love it. The tippyness of a boat is very subjective, so I will only try to offer my opinion.

I did capsize the boat a couple of times. At first it did feel tippy, jittery. But the movement stayed and the perception changed. The boat now feels responsive, stable. It is my first kayak, I paddled this boat almost exclusively. Although I have tried other boats for brief periods, the Exp Sgl. is sufficiently stable let this beginner have a splendid (and dry!) time. I would recommend the Expedition Single most enthusiastically!

I am 6'4" tall, with most of my height in my torso, and that moves my CG upward. To counteract this, I strived to keep the seat as low as possible, jsut about right on the hull. The narrow beam is a real asset for not banging the paddle or your knuckles on the boat.

The boat is magnificent, I heartily recommend it.
