Hatch Covers

Posted by: Scotty on December 2, 1999

First, let me opine that a "Furniture Quality" stripper deserves a proper wooden hatch cover. However, there is a place for the plastic hatch cover on flat back luan doorskin decked S/Gs, painted boats, and the occasional canvas covered Walrus. But, $170 bux...phew! So, as I perused the new issue of the Duluth Trading & Holiday Gift Guide, on p. 41, under "Accessorize Your Bucket", I was surprised to find Kayak Hatch Covers! Imagine, only $9.99, available in blue or white. Of course, the ignorenti were marketing them as covers for 5 gal pails! "Super Seal, an easy-to-remove air-and-water-tight lid" Comes with a base to mount on the boat/pail, and a locking threaded cover that spins off and on. Apparently, if I make a hole in the deck that looks like the top of a 5 gal pail, this system can be mounted onto it. It has an embossed cross pattern on the surface to facilitate rotating the lid to seal. Might need some work to improve the seal, maybe a wood cover could be mounted on top... I figger we've got a few weeks lead time before they raise the price! Has anyone else seen this catalogue/item? Thoughts? TNX, Scotty
