I didn't paddle either of the kayaks I built when I made the choice of what to build. This worked for me because I really enjoyed the process of building nearly as much as paddling. (Actually, finishing each was a bit cathartic) Also, if you're like 95% of the people on this board, you'll go on to build another (and another, and...). The first one just gets you primed. Would I have chosen different boats to build had I paddled them first? Probably not. I built a Panache and a Guillemot, and they both have their own characteristics and I love them both. So if you've got the opportunity to paddle beforehand, sure go ahead. But if not, don't get bogged-down in picking the perfect design. Find one that grabs your interest, buy the plans, and get moving. Remember, kayak plans make the perfect stocking-stuffer.
