VVHF Radios

I am an aspiring addict, about to order a Coho kit. Checking messages on this board has been very helpful in a lot of ways. But now for something a little different - VHF radios.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm curious and sort of gadget oriented. I know nothing about VHF - good brands, FCCregulations, channels, appropriate uses, etc. Anybody feel like getting a discussion going?
