Dave, what boats have you measured and by how much do they vary?, I'm under the impression that the width is simply the widest point on the kayak. That could be anywhere around the middle of the kayak. It's possible that the numbers given by the manufacuturer are some measurement from the plans and don't take into account thickeness of the seam tape? Or if it is a plastic boat there's probably some variation. What is this measurement doing for you?
