Hey Dean

This ain't Ross, and I can't help much on Q. #1, but, on two, you may have too much light. If your material is all light colored, turn the lights down low or off and use a flashlight or one small lamp and point it down the hull and the variations should show pretty well. Then you could shade the high spots with a pencil and just work those areas a bit more.
