I am in the process of building a hollow shaft paddle using two peices of outside corner molding that was glued together to form a rectangular hollow shaft. This was rounded over to form an oval shaft which was then covered with fiberglass. The blades are 1/8 inch plywood that was glassed on both sides. My question is: Do I need or want the weave filled on the blades. Is the idea to get them as smooth as possible or do I want them to have some "bite"?
I am trying to keep them as light as possible. So far, without varnish, the paddle is as light as my $200 Werner of the same dimensions.
