I have nick's footbrace and the rudder control in my Tred Avon. The rudder control broke once, and I beefed up the structure around the sliding track. Also, it tends to get pushed off the forward end of the track if the retainer rope is disconnected. I've yet to set up a tie-off for that but it is a simple fix.
Both of these controls are excellent. On the rudder I used 1/8" kevlar line inside poly tubing and it is very smooth working. Much nicer than my Cape Charles with the standard CLC rudder kit in it. On the footbrace I have never had a problem. The quick and easy adjustability makes it more comfortable, with less tendancy for the legs to fall asleep. I'd highly recommend it. If you are really concerned about breaking it, beef up the center structure with some glass. If you can find a plastic track it might slide easier.
