Not at all a whacko idea, the more the merrier. But a standard hatch us usually long enough to angle in long things, I suppose if you need to store something specific like a solid 6ft. pole or a very tall tripod then a 8" screw top Beckson hatch would be a fine idea. I think you can get a clear one. Access to the back compartment would be very awkward if this is the only access.
