I've used this design as well, first as an ordinary type then converted it to a rudder type . I made the clearances tighter between the rail and the slider but soon found that they where too tight when the wood swelled , had to seal the wood really well. the only real problem I've had with breakage are the hooks for the adjusting rope ,but that is my fault for oversculpting with a dremmel and weakening them, I solved this by drilling a 1/4" hole down through the center them and glueing in a piece of dowel. Other than that I couldn't be happier with it , I can spend all day in the boat without discomfort, its easy to adjust and it works smoothly.
