Internal stem pieces

Posted by: Kelly Trehearne on December 12, 1999

Hello to all,

In his book, Nick describes how to bevel the endforms and includes a tip on leaving this bevelled portion in the finished kayak, as an internal stem. Recently there was some discussion on bevelling the endforms using one of the strips, to get the 'correct' angle on the bevel. I did not see this in the book. I am getting the endforms for the Great Auk ready and want to hear from anyone with advice on the endform bevels. I am planning to glue the strips to the endforms and leave the bevelled portion in the kayak. My question is : Can you just bevel the plywood and leave this piece of plywood in the kayak? Do these internal stems serve another purpose in addition to a gluing surface for the strips? I will laminate strips of ash or something for the outer stems.

Thanks for any help.

Kelly
