Re: 'football' on hull - necessary?

My epoxy pumps burp too........ At least they both burp and I've never had a batch not go off because of any difference in the ratio. As far as the football thing..... I've done both ways and IMHO I like to put just one layer of 6oz. I bias cut some cloth and double up the stems making sure that I go about 2' or so onto the bottom of the canoe. How strong is it? One of my own canoes has fallen off of my lifted Jeep Wagoneer twice. The first time it made a hairline crack about 5" long near the bilge...a little sanding and it was like new. The second time it fell off (don't ask why it keeps falling off ;-) ) the first thing it hit was a cinder block...on the sharp edge. That did break through the epoxy/glass weave but again, a little sanding and some more epoxy and were like new again. The nice thing about these types of canoes is that most abrasion type damage can be repaired with some easy sanding, a squeege of epoxy, and a fresh coat of varnish...in fact most abrasion can be "fixed" with a coat of varnish alone. Doug
