Epoxy Heat

Posted by: Bill Boyd on December 18, 1999

I thought this might be of interest to some builders using epoxy pumps in subtropical conditions. A year ago I built an insulated cabinet to store my epoxy and hardener in with a hair dryer set on medium using an old waterbed thermostatic control mounted on the side with the sensing bulb mounted on the inside. Well yesterday I decided get rid of the hair dryer because of the radio interference and power consumption , I had a 250 watt infrared bulb kicking around and remembering a post a few weeks back from Don Beale about infrared heaters about warming of objects and more efficient than forced air. I snipped the cord on the hair dryer ( it was covered in clear residue that was hard was almost like clear laquer... Scarey!!) and mounted a socket to the top of the cabinet pointed downward like the warming racks at some of those burger joints and sheilded the sensing bulb from the direct rays with some foil. I played with the thermostat over the next few hours while I took the snowthrower apart lubricated the moving parts and reassembeled it. last night I mixed up some dookie smutz to fill gaps and cracks on the canoe the epoxy was nice and warm and the pumps work much better.. easy to pump...no burps!! I suppose you could even do this out in the open under a IR lamp ...keep your takeout warm to boot .regulate the temp with distance or a light dimmer or if you wanted to get fancy with a sensor in a container in the proximity fo your epoxy and hardener filled with water or if your worried about freezing ,motor oil or cheap scotch... sorry Scotty they both taste about the same to me.

Later Bill
