Good idea Dale. Here is another, but I don't have a scanner so I can't post my drawing. Hope you can get the idea from the description.
1- Make your bulkhead from a piece of closed cell foam.
2- take 2 wood strip panels and cut them to the same shape as the foam but cut them 1/4" - 3/8" smaller.
3- laminate the panels to the foam, one on each side.
4- glue complete bulkhead unit into place with a good quality adhesive.
5- Fill the 1/4" - 3/8" gap between the wood panel and hull with a good quality sealer.
This method uses the best of woodstripping for looks, while keeping the benefit of a foam bulkhead. With the added strength of the wood you could use a thinner piece of foam.
What do you guys think. Will it work?
Ian
