Spam: It's not just for breakfast anymore

The term 'spam' as applied to the Internet, originally started as a reference to multiple postings of the same message to the same USENET news group, or cross-postings to many USENET news groups.

This term later evolved to take on the meaning of 'unsolicited email', but in the truest sense it applies to bulk email only (like the bulk junk mail you get through the regular post office). Spam is not just any post that is an off-topic advertisement or otherwise inappropriate, although the word is often used to describe such posts...and those that post those types of messages are well aware how the word is meant in that context.
