3M's Finesse It (an automotive buffing liquid) worked great for me. Sand out to 1000 or even 1500 (get at automotive finishing store) and then squirt on the Finesse it and buff with a wool-like buffing pad in your ROS. It really works much, much better if the varnish has had awhile (maybe at least a week) to harden first - the harder it is the more it polishes instead of justing gumming up.

I use this stuff to buff out varnish, and it even works on poly as long as you let the poly harden first.
