Cooking Knu ..should I baste ?

Posted by: Bill Boyd on December 20, 1999

I have some questions about printthrough you may be able to help me with I thought it best not to tempt fate with the drun... I mean relatives coming and the garage being the smoking area, the canoe only glassed on the outside. So I'm going to glass the inside tomorrow evening . but I was going to set up a tent over the canoe with a 220 v electric heater under it to finish the cure ,I read somewhere 140 degrees for two hours. first I should say I'm using West System resin with 206 slow hardener and have built one canoe and one kayak with it and have had a problem with printthrough both times even after following the action of heating the epoxied surface with a heat gun several times. And usually becomes pronounced halfway through the summer , I've had to sand and revarnish both boats. My brother built a canoe at the same time as I using the 205 fast hardener and didn't even bother to heat his and the surface is still like glass two years later, go figure. I don't like using the fast hardener because of an immediate and severe reaction. So what I was wondering is 140 degrees written in stone or should I bump it up 10 degrees and slow cook this turkey for longer than two hours ,I know George suggests wrapping the boat in plastic and leaving it in the sun to bake , but there is a severe wind chill warning on for tonight ,which is why I am not glassing till tomorrow. Also should I do it right after the initial cure or wait a week or two. I know MAS epoxy is popular amongst many of you builders and some of you have tried others brands is this a common problem ,or just my problem? West is the only brand available locally which is why I have been using it , Although I can mail order other brands ,my sensitivity to epoxy is controllable with what I'm using now, although I haven't tried anything else. Any advice or suggestions you can offer would be appreciated. thanks in advance Bill
