Hi Kent, I used to work in a home center in high school. We stocked exotic hardwoods and all of our purpleheart was very deep purple when oxidized, and a bright purple when cut.
If I hadn't read the others' responses, I'd have said it's probably padauk; maybe you've got a different subspecies or section of tree from the wood I've seen.
The wood you bought...is it purple on the outside? If so, then there's no reason to believe it shouldn't turn purple after it's been on the boat awhile.
