You know what irks me?
Ive got a small "library" of about 4 books on kayaking. You know the basic introduction to the sport and such. Nicks book doesnt fit in this category tho it does a nice job. My beeef with these "welcome to the wonderful world of..." books is they NEVER mention the option of building your own kayak out of wood. The chapters on kayak construction [etc. etc.] only mention: Roto-Molded, Fiberglass, Kevlar, and portable folding types. Most dont have a single pic of a wood kayak - ANDDDDD the one pic where a wood kayak is part of a group pic of different types, its totally ignored in the accompanying caption. theres a fiber glass , a rotomolded, and a wood. The author just decided to ignore the Pigmy LOL!!!! What the heck is this about? One of the worst books on the sport is one called: THE WOMANS GUIDE TO SEA KAYAKING - [m paraphrasing here folks.]Every single yak in the book is a damned barge, and whats with the sexist title? Im really suspect of the intentions of the author on a number of levels with a bias that effectively blows away half the market. After reading thru the book, there wasnt a darned thing I could see that warranted a "womans only" slant. Essentially the stress was " yeah kayaks look tippy but dont be scared," and "you can pee like a man in your kayak with this device called a...". With such empty reasons for a bias, it left me wondering why there was one at all. Not that I wondered myself into exhaustion.
At anyrate, on a GOOD note, theres a great issue Canoe&Kayak magazine at a fraction of the cost strictly for those interested in looking into the sport. And lo and behold, they mention the wood alternative!!!!!
Pete
