Mariner kayaks have a nice bow line system. There is a U-shaped ring in the bow. The 1/4" or so nylon rope runs from a deck cleat in front of the cockpit, up through the ring, and back to clip to itself at the deck cleat.
With the cleat, you can fasten the "middle" of the loop line so that it doesn't run freely back and forth.
You can also disconnect it from "loop mode" and use it for towing.
They use a very heavy-duty nylon clip on the end of the rope; I'm not sure these are commercially available (or widely available, as I've never seen them in stores).
