Re: builder's ethics

Posted by: Nick Schade - Guillemot Kayaks on December 26, 1999

I published the offsets in the book with the intention that people could build boats from them without paying me any additional fee. The published plans are not in the public domain, I reserve all rights. I would feel ripped off if you started producing my designs for resale as you would be making a profit off my intelectual property. I would feel entitled to a cut of the profit.

From a business stand point I _hope_ you buy a set of plans, as this helps support me. When I sell full-sized plans, it is with the understanding that you will only build one boat from the plans. I depend on the fair play of boat builders to give me credit (ie $$$) for my work. The book supplies some of this, but the plans supply more.
