Like Jim, I tried both ways on the first boat. When leaving the excess to harden, I usually forgot about it and waited too long before scraping it off. When it's completely hard, you can get some tear-out, so be careful if you go this route. I found that removing the glue immediately with a damp (not sopping wet) cloth worked best. In the finished boat, I didn't see any patches that I could attribute to the glue being rubbed into the wood.
