Hey, that guy's pretty handsome ;-)

I guess it's time for an update on the trailer. There were some more pictures that showed the front boom attachment up close. It consists of a wooden cradle inverted over the deck and atttached to a carbon fiber windsurf mast remnant. The other end has a ball joint set into the end in epoxy. The ball joint sets down over a shaft attached to the seat post and held in place with a large nut. That part of the setup couldn't be working better.

The rear was a golf bag cart, and lasted three whole trips to the beach before the center beam failed, bent and then cracked in two. I rebuilt the rear trailer with two 20" bmx wheels. I built a frame out of 1x3" poplar that's about 3' wide by 2' long. It has two poplar boards on each side, spaced to the width of the nuts on the bmx wheel axles. There are grooves in the bottom for the axles to slip into, and wood strips over the axles to hold them in place. I put a 3/8" plywood deck across the middle. Then I built small cradles on another pair of poplar boards (two on each side) and put them on both sides of the plywood (I'll try to post a picture of the finished unit next week some time). The boat sits on the four cradles and then gets strapped down.

I tested it the other day and was amazed at its stability. I was able to crank down the road in the big gears at around 15 to 20 mph without any wobbling or tipping over the railroad crossing (pretty bumpy 45 degree angle crossing). I'm now working on a plan to stack one (or even two) kayaks on top of the first so I can paddle with friends from our house. The trailer is wide enough to build an attachment with a raised cradle on top, but I think I could just stack them on foam pads, deck-to-deck, and strap-em down.

I'll let you know what happens...
