Pattern for cutting strips

Posted by: Jim Zanner on December 31, 1999

I have found that it is very easy to custom cut strips accurately by using duct tape as a pattern. Simple place duct tape over the area to be fitted and either make a rub indicator by running your fingernail along the borders or use a sharp utility knife to cut the tape along the borders. Remove the tape from the hull and carefully place it onto the strip to be cut. Cut out near the margin/border of the tape with a band saw and then shape to the border of the tape with a table sander. This will give you a very precise fit most of the time with minimal adjustment. Surprisingly, duct tape does not stretch much when handled carefully.
