It shouldn't be too much of a problem, except at the ends. I agree it is a high volume kayak, but it is balanced so it doesn't weathercock, you just get blown slightly sideways in a crosswind. How much do you weigh? At 170 lbs. the Tern works well for my day paddling. A better idea might be to recess the coaming.
