Re: Artic Tern butt joints

Posted by: lee on January 1, 2000

mark, the only risk as I can tell is whether the joint will stay together for assembly, I made a pygmy 13 4 yrs ago and the joints were held with a butt block on one side only,no problem during assembly. The final strength isn't much of an issue since most of the strength is carried by the 6oz glass on the outside as well as all those layer of 6oz on the inside. Or butt block as the case with the 13. I think if you skip the fancy 4oz tape for the inside and outside and just use a double strip of 6oz cloth there shouldn't be a problem. the only one I could think of is if you are gluing more than one joint on top of the other(different panels seperated by plastic) then the panels may not stay flat with weights pushing down on different thicknesses. In other words two layers of plywood with 4 layers of glass at the joints. but I could be thinking too much.
