Nick--I just got one FE! before I was able to read your post.
Are all 4 BBS's on the same server? If they are that would seem to eliminate server activity as the cause of the FE!, since it only seems to happen on the KBbbs.
My perception is that the KBbbs seems to work very well with very quick response until a FE! occurs. Then it becomes almost impossible to retrieve any post. It struck me that this sort of response could be caused if there was some sort of "watchdog" timer on the script that retrieves posts. Suppose the script exits with an error condition after it uses more than 1 second of CPU time. On a BBS with less messages it never takes a full second to retrieve any post. On a larger BBS when the server is not busy it may take .75 second to retrieve a post. No problem. But when the server gets busy the retrieval time creeps up to 1 second, at which point the retrieve script aborts because it has used too much time.
