Re: Hatch Cutting

Posted by: lee on January 5, 2000

hi doyle, don't know about the jig saw handle, but as far as hole cutting goes the reason for holding off is just that the deck is not exactly a strong structure by itself for sawing away at. Go ahead and install the deck but instead of trying to glass the inside seam as instructed I think it's ok to do it piecemeal. When I built a coho I taped the deck on,glued it from the outside, ran a small bead of slightly thickened epoxy down the inside by tilting it on edge, glassed the deck and cut out the hatches, THEN taped the inside. Still had to reach inside to sand clean and glass the shear joint but the most important parts of the seam were all reachable by hand, maybe this seems a little obsessive but I just don't think glassing 1 1/2 tape 6 ft away is the best way to make a good joint.
