Re: 18.5' Putz Kayak

Posted by: Tom Kurth on January 5, 2000

Hey Gary. Good luck with the Walrus. I'm currently working on an 18.5'. I just oiled the frame this week-end. Couple of points I'll pass along: As Mike said, if you build with a traditional cockpit rather than the arched, make sure you cut out floors and raise the deck enough to allow room for your feet. I'm building for quiet waters and using the arched cockpit and there's only about 6" between deck and sole. Regarding wood choices, I'm just using what I have around: red fir for the stringers, oak for the keel, stems, etc., redwood for deck beams, soles, carlins. Point being, I don't think any reasonably suitable wood is going to ruin the boat. As Putz points out, most of the frame won't be seen once the canvas is on. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress. Tom
