I think there's probably a reason they recommend two layers and not one or none. It's a double? go with two it's not expensive, if you absolutely can't weight then cut up a bunch of 6oz cloth on the bias ,2" wide strips,, pure guessing , I would think that 6oz on bias with 9oz tape would be strong enough.although glassing bunches of 2" wide strips could look messy if not careful
