I'll warn in advance this solution isn't main-stream, and very few people will have access to the stuff needed:

If you are in the IT career field, or have a friend who is, the little dust covers that go over fiber optic ST connectors on a network hub makes a very nice cap to the end of your bugies when epoxied on. Someone else my know of dust covers used for other purposes that may work.
